Psychological & Emotional Abuse
As kids, we start with ideas and dreams of what it will be like when we are grown - who we will be, who we’ll meet, who we’ll fall in love with - and what isn’t included is how we might be wounded on the way. People need people - it’s a truth we can deny, but it stays there. We start denying it when we start believing we aren’t enough as we are, or that we are too much. It’s a phrase I hear often from clients who have shared their experiences growing up with parents who dismiss their feelings, or with bullies at school who chronically pick them apart on a daily basis for years, or with partners who do not know how to be healthy partners.
All of these scenarios leave a person with low self-worth. They feel isolated, worthless, and at some points, “crazy”, like they don’t even know what’s true anymore.
